War for the Planet of the Apes
Starring: Woody Harrelson and Andy Serkis
In the the third chapter of the critically acclaimed blockbuster franchise, Caesar and his apes are forced into a deadly conflict with an army of humans led by a ruthless Colonel, played by Woody Harrelson.
After the apes suffer unimaginable losses, Caesar wrestles with his darker instincts and the journey finally brings them face to face as Caesar and the Colonel are pitted against each other in an epic battle that will determine the fate of both their species and the future of the planet.
Usually by the time a 3rd chapter of a series comes out, the franchise is suffering from lack of enthusiasm, ideas and story. “War for the Planet of the Apes” has none of those symptoms.
The film offers a very smart story which is filled with compassion and a genuine understanding of the horrors of war.
Wood Harrelson is in top form as the warlord who is raging his own war against the apes, similar to the way Custer fought the Indian Nation.
But it is Andy Serkis who propels the film with his deep and poignant turn as Caesar. We need to petition the Academy to add Serkis to this year's nominations for Best Actor.
“War for the Planet of the Apes” is a powerful film both as a sci-fi and a statement about the human condition.
It gets an A and is rated PG-13.
